Al-Sayed was a citizen journalist who videotaped anti-government demonstrations and clashes in Homs, Syria. He died on Dec. 27 of wounds suffered five days earlier when he was shot, reportedly by security forces at a checkpoint. Al-Sayed’s footage appeared on many websites of citizen and activist groups, documenting public unrest in the absence of outside professional journalists, who generally are not allowed in Syria. He was 24.
