Shot March 20 by gunmen near the Italian embassy in Mogadishu in what was believed to be a planned assassination stemming from anti-Italian feelings due to a recent clashed between Italian troops and Somalis. She was shot once in the head and bled to death. Alpi was 28 and a correspondent for her TV network. She had previously worked for the newspaper Paese Sera and Italia Radio. She had also reported from France, Morocco and the former Yugoslavia.
