Jacoby was killed April 27 at a forward airfield in Australia when a fighter plane went out of control during takeoff and crashed into a group of people waiting to board a nearby transport plane. Army Air Corps Brig. Gen. Harold George also was killed. A Pacific theater correspondent during World War II, Jacoby covered the Japanese invasion of the Philippines.
