Died July 12 with a dozen other correspondents in the crash of a Dutch airliner near Bombay, returning from a tour of Indonesia. A longtime correspondent in Europe, he won a Pulitzer Prize in 1931 for his coverage of the Russian purge trials for the Philadelphia Public Ledger and the New York Evening Post. He was one of the first reporters to be deported from Nazi Germany.
