News Organization: ABC

Died: 1979

Location: NICARAGUA

War: NICARAGUAN REVOLUTION/CIVIL WAR (1978-1979; 1983-1990)

Executed June 20 by a Nicaraguan soldier. While covering the fighting between government troops and Sandinista rebels, he was forced to his knees at a roadblock, told to lie face down, then shot in the head. President Jimmy Carter called the murder “an act of barbarism." "Journalists seeking to report the news and inform the public are soldiers in no nation’s army," Carter said. "When they are made innocent victims of violence and war, all people who cherish the truth and believe in free debate pay a terrible price.”
