Shot to death by two gunmen Dec. 9 in Minneapolis as he returned home from grocery shopping and stepped out of his car. He was a longtime radical publisher who campaigned against vice, the banks and his former friend, Gov. Floyd B. Olson. In its page one story of the murder, The New York Times referred to him as a "crusading publisher" who "had waged constant warfare against vice and gambling in Minnesota." Despite eyewitness identification of one killer, no one was convicted of the murder. His wife and daughter, seated in the back seat of the family's Ford, escaped injury.
