The Herald's ship, the Jeannette, was crushed by ice on an Arctic expedition and sank on June 12. Those aboard left the area in three small boats that were separated in an Arctic Ocean gale. Collins, 40, is believed to have died of exposure and starvation. The native of Ireland was a trained meteorologist as well as a weather reporter for the Herald. He was assigned to fulfill both duties with the expedition. He joined the Herald in 1875 after a varied career, mainly as an engineer. He developed a weather-reporting service for the Herald.
