Shot to death on May 31 by the leftist terrorist group Shining Path, whose members stopped the government-owned pickup truck in which she was riding, 150 miles southeast of Lima. The Lithuanian-born journalist was traveling in the region to write about alpacas and llamas. She was considered Peru's leading environmental reporter.
