Shot Dec. 12 near the University of Tajikistan in Dushanbe. He was head of BBC radio's Persian Service there and was a nationally known poet, photographer and filmmaker, as well as a journalist. His popular BBC radio series, "From Dushanbe to Los Angeles," brought him wide attention in his country. The motive for his murder remains unclear.
