Killed by a Syrian rocket on Oct. 17 while covering the Yom Kippur War. A well-known and widely respected Fleet Street journalist, he wrote two books and worked as his newspaper's special correspondent. He once wrote of his craft: "The only qualities essential for real success in journalism are ratlike cunning, a plausible manner and a little literary ability." He was 42.
