Howard K. Smith covers the first two years of World War II in Germany for United Press. Joining CBS Radio in 1941, he escapes from Berlin on Dec. 6, 1941. Smith remains in Europe through most of the war. He covers the Nuremberg trials in 1946 and succeeds Edward R. Murrow as CBS's chief European correspondent.
