Gene Policinski Interviews Ezra Klein, Founder of Vox, at Advertising Week DC, Sponsored by Newseum

#ADWKDC2018On Thursday, Oct. 18, the Newseum was among the sponsors represented at Advertising Week DC (ADWKDC), a conference planned by the Washington, D.C., chapter of the American Advertising Federation.

The conference, held this year at the Ronald Reagan Building, brought together marketers, advertisers, journalists and other media leaders in the area.

Sonya Gavankar, director of public relations at the Newseum, hosted the event.

Gene Policinski, president and chief operating officer of the Freedom Forum Institute, the education and outreach partner of the Newseum, interviewed Ezra Klein, editor-at-large and founder of Vox, in a fireside chat on the topic of “Content Today.”

Klein described Vox’s explanatory journalism approach as seeking to make “complex problems appealing and clear” to the average reader. He also defined a successful story for Vox as when “we’ve taken someone from curiosity to understanding.”

Policinski and Klein share some striking professional similarities, considering the Freedom Forum Institute president is among the founding editors of USA TODAY. In addition to being members of the news media “founders club,” both leaders personally explore new technology and methods of newsgathering and reporting.

Policinski hosts and co-hosts a variety of online audio and video programs produced by the Freedom Forum Institute, including “The First Five” podcast. He is also co-author of the nationally distributed commentary “Inside the First Amendment.”

Klein, who got his start in blogging before transitioning to journalism, also hosts his own podcast, “The Ezra Klein Show,” which features various “newsmakers and power players in politics and media.”

In a centennial celebration following the ADWKDC conference, Scott Williams, former president and chief operating officer of the Newseum, was presented with the Silver Medal Award, which “honors a member of the advertising community who has made outstanding contributions to advertising and who has been active in furthering the industry’s standards.”
