The 9/11 Gallery Sponsored by Comcast explores the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001 and the extraordinary challenges journalists faced as they reported the news to a shocked and saddened world.
To mark the 18th anniversary of the attacks, the Newseum will host an Inside Media program, “Remembering 9/11” with journalist Garrett Graff on Saturday, Sept. 14. Graff will talk about his new book, “The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of 9/11,” which provides a comprehensive account of Sept. 11 through hundreds of interviews with government officials, first responders, survivors, friends and family members.
Additionally, NewseumED offers educators resources to guide classroom discussion of what happened that day, its aftermath and the continuing impact on domestic and global events.
Download our classroom-ready lesson plan, “From the Front Page to the History Books: Understanding News as the First Draft of History.” In this activity, students analyze the similarities and differences between news coverage and historical accounts of Sept. 11 to understand the role and importance of journalists’ first reports of breaking news and how the initial information available about a news event evolves over time to become part of the historical record.
You can also view our archived Front Pages of 114 publications that covered the tragedy.
Registration in NewseumED is required, but it’s free.
