The Newseum marks the 40th anniversary of the final days of American involvement in the Vietnam War with a special program featuring an extended preview of the Oscar-nominated AMERICAN EXPERIENCE film “Last Days in Vietnam,” produced and directed by Rory Kennedy. The film debuts on PBS on April 28 at 9 p.m.

The program also includes a conversation with Kennedy, an Emmy Award-winning independent documentary filmmaker, as well as co-founder and president of Moxie Firecracker Films.

Joining Kennedy will be retired Col. Stuart A. Herrington and Binh Pho, who are both featured in the film. While serving on a team investigating missing military personnel in Saigon, then-Capt. Herrington was the last member of the U.S. Army to leave Vietnam, departing from the roof of the U.S. Embassy. A college student in South Vietnam during the war, Pho spent a year in a re-education camp after the war. He escaped by boat in 1978.

On Friday, May 22, the Newseum will open “Reporting Vietnam,” a provocative new exhibit that marks the 50th anniversary of the start of the Vietnam War, America’s first televised war. The exhibit explores the dramatic stories of how journalists brought news about the war to a divided nation.

Exclusive corporate funding for American Experience is provided by Liberty Mutual Insurance. Major funding provided by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Additional funding for “Last Days in Vietnam” provided by The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations: Dedicated to Strengthening America’s Future Through Education; The Documentary Investment Group: Gretchen Stone Cook Charitable Foundation; Roxanne E. & Michael J. Zak; and by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and public television viewers. American Experience is produced for PBS by WGBH Boston.
