Samantha Allen talks about her new book, “Real Queer America: LGBT Stories From Red States,” which takes readers on a tour through vibrant queer communities sprouting up in traditional red states.

Allen, a senior reporter with The Daily Beast, traveled cross-country from Provo, Utah to the Rio Grande Valley to the Bible Belt and deep South, making pit stops at drag shows, political rallies and hubs of queer life across America.

In the book, she introduces us to LGBT people working for change, including the first openly transgender mayor in Texas, a bisexual activist in Mississippi, the manager of the only queer bar in Bloomington, Ind., and many more.

Allen is a GLAAD Award-winning journalist and author of “Love & Estrogen” who has appeared on MSNBC, CNN and NPR.

A book signing will follow the program.

The Newseum’s newest exhibit, “Rise Up: Stonewall and the LGBTQ Rights Movement,” explores the modern gay rights movement in the United States.

“Rise Up” is presented by Wells Fargo.
